A GREY-SCHIST FRIEZE

Ancient Pakistan, Gandhara region, 2nd/3rd c.

The frieze is sculpted in high relief with Buddha Shakyamuni standing in the centre, his right hand raised in the abhayamudra while the left is falling down holding a section of his mantle which is draped over both shoulders and falling down in broad concentric pleats, his face displaying a serene expression, his hairdo combed in the ushnisha, head-halo behind and flanked to both sides with each two standing male figures including two monks.
